the heart of Old Town Mount Airy you will find the unique
antique shopping experience of Shops of Yesteryear. An antique
mall with over 80 active dealers of quality antiques and
collectibles. Shops of Yesteryear was started just over
three years ago by a father and son team, Delaine and Scott
Hobbs, after closing their Lumber business of over 107 years
in the family. Delaine will tell you that his son Scott
designed the shop with features such as individual dealer
shops complete with store front and windows which makes
one feel they are walking down an old town street lined
with shops. Open area shops also adorn the mall where dealers
display their wares in well organized spaces. Walk the 100
year old wood floors or go into the latest section with
tile walkways and carpeted shop areas then go upstairs to
the Art Gallery and more antique shops.
When dealers made remarks about having problems finding
frames for old art work Scott and his dad decided to enter
into the framing business to compliment their mall. Last
October, after a lot of training for Scott, Delaine and
George, the framing shop opened with much fan fare, and
local artists began bringing in their work. This prompted
Scott to talk about the possibility for the opening of an
Art Gallery which will now open Oct 1st of this year featuring
over 20 local artists as well as many national artists works.
The gallery was designed of course by Scott and provides
a a walk through quality art feature. The uniqueness of
this gallery promotes a wide variety of art utilizing every
foot of floor space that was dedicated to the gallery. A
must see feature of an amazingly different antique mall.
Both Delaine and Scott began working at the Lumber Company
at the age of 14 on a part time basis during high school
and college and became full time upon completion of education.
Delaine has been there for 51 years and Scott for 16 years
as employees first and then owners of the business operations.
Both studied business management in college and with experience
of a combined 67 years have been able to put together a
change from the ordinary antique shopping experience for
their customers. They boast that theirs is a dealer, owner
operation where each dealer is part of our friendly, store
family. The friendly staff of Yesteryear consists of Beth,
George, Heather, Pat, and Diane as well as Scott and Delaine.
