Antique Center
I II III at Historic Savage Mill in Savage, MD
Owner:
Julie Baker
Julie
Baker, owner/ director of The Antique Center I, II, III
at Historic Savage Mill opened Antique Center I in 1988.
Antique II in 1989 and Antique III in 1992.
Much before this time, Julie along with her sister Evelyn,
had a small antique business - Treasured Tymes- selling
mostly linens, china and some country. Having a shop in
Ellicott City, doing the show circuit and working as a registered
nurse in pediatrics proved to be a bit challenging for Julie,
to say the least! She had the idea to open a small place
along with some good friends where shop time could be shared
and friendships enjoyed. While searching for a suitable
building in which to start the business, she was approached
by the owners of Savage Mill, visited the Mill and literally
fell in love with its uniqueness and location.
And so was born, Antique Center I in 1988- named only,
"The Antique Center" --because in Julie's wildest
dreams she could not have imagined Antique Centers II and
III. The business was successful beyond expectations, doubled
in size in 1989 (Antique Center II) and quadrupled in size
(Antique Center III) in 1992. Julie Baker, along with Co-Director
R. Blake Billmyre, has assembled a group of 225 outstanding
antique dealers, who represent 14 states and have given
Antique Centers I, II, and III the reputation of being among
the best in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Historic Savage Mill sits on 17 acres along the banks
of the Little Patuxent River, just off 1-95, midway between
Washington and Baltimore. The 19th Century Textile Mill,
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has
been meticulously restored to highlight the original features
of the 12 buildings. The textile mill no longer weaves material,
but has become a major regional destination for high quality
antiques, upscale specialty retail shops, art and craft
studios and restoration artists. Antique Centers I, II and
III are just one of the 50 businesses at Savage Mill.
Julie Baker was born, raised and educated in Baltimore.
She is the daughter of John and Evelyn Orlando, attended
St. Dominic's Grade School, Seton High School and St. Agnes
Hospital School of Nursing. She is married to John L. Baker
and they are the parents of 3 daughters and 1 son - all
young adults and doing well. Her family is truly her pride
and joy. She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, family
celebrations, antiquing, and antiquing and then some antiquing
on the side!
She has recently been named among "Who's Who"
in American Women Entrepreneurs and also accepted the position
of Baltimore Regional Representative for ADAM, She is active
in Savage Mill merchant marketing and also promotes several
antique shows at the Mill each year.
Julie considers herself more than fortunate to be among
family friends and business associates who have made the
business what it is today--a success!
